SMART TEXTILE
Artificial intelligence algorithms for camouflage clothing design
The SMART TEXTILE project aims to implement, in a flexible way, camouflage patterns created by combining images of an environment taken in the field.
This is an innovative initiative led by the companies IRIS Techonolgy and Future Space with secpho as coordinator. In addition, it has the collaboration of PCAMI (Park and Supply Center of Quartermaster Material of the Army), one of the main supply centers of our country.
The initiative has received funding from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism corresponding to Next Generation EU funds, canalised through the support programme for Innovative Business Groups, whose objective is to digitalise industry.
The development of new camouflage patterns for textiles and technical materials has numerous applications in the military as well as in agriculture and industry.
The Spanish technical textiles industry has the great challenge of developing a new generation of technical textiles and materials with camouflage weaves fully adapted to the environment. In Spain we have a good ecosystem of SMEs with great capabilities in the development of technical textiles in an industry that is in continuous growth due to the introduction of advanced materials and new technologies in this sector promoted from the demand sectors.
Considering that there is a tremendous variety of different landscapes and environments in the world, it represents a great opportunity to be able to implement, in a flexible way, camouflage patterns created by combining a series of images of an environment taken on the ground.
To this end, the evolution of artificial intelligence techniques and algorithms represents a great opportunity to digitize both the technical fabric development processes and the digital creation of new camouflage patterns, which in recent years continue to be marked by a series of completely manual tasks with non-existent traceability and repeatability and subjected to the intuition of expert personnel.
This project is carried out in collaboration with PCAMI (Parque y Centro de Abastecimiento de Material de Intendencia del Ejército de Tierra), one of the main supply centers in our country whose Logistics Unit, created more than 130 years ago, specializes in the design and management of clothing and equipment. This center played a key role in the shipment of personal protective equipment during the COVID19 pandemic. It also has one of the leading ENAC-accredited textile R&D laboratories in Spain.
