SKINSENS
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer and is increasing worldwide. Historically, the diagnosis of skin cancers has relied on a variety of conventional techniques, mainly biopsies, which are performed invasively. A wide variety of commercial diagnostic tools and ancillary techniques are available to detect this type of cancer.
Non-invasive diagnosis of skin cancer includes technologies and methods such as dermoscopy, ultrasound, confocal microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, optical coherence tomography, thermography and electrical bioimpedance. However, these techniques have a number of negative aspects: they are invasive for the patient, they are not immediate (a sample must be taken to the laboratory), they are expensive and require highly specialized personnel and equipment.
In order to provide a solution to alleviate these problems, the SkinSens project has been initiated, whose objective is to develop a thermo-optical sensor with electrical reading to detect these skin alterations, designing a prototype to be used for validation. Skinsens will have a significant social impact, especially in terms of public health, as it is a new solution that can be used in a simple and practical way as a “point of care” in medical centers and in surgical procedures in hospitals, reducing the volume of complications and advances of the undiagnosed condition.
In order to carry out this research, a consortium was formed by the following members Radiantis, ASE Optics Europe, Procarelight and Instituto de Fotomedicina which, coordinated by secpho, has been a beneficiary of the Next Generation EU funds channeled by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism within the support program for AEIs, whose objective is to digitalize the industry.
In this event the results of the project will be presented in English to the secpho ecosystem and other entities that want to learn about the latest developments in the health sector. You can read more about the project here.
